Jingdezhen's ceramics industry output topped 90 billion yuan for the first time in 2024, up from 66.5 billion yuan in 2022, and ceramic exports reached 7.9 billion yuan that year. China's historic porcelain capital still leads in hand-thrown and hand-painted pieces, but a growing share of output now comes from automated tableware factories and technical ceramics. The city also has a large online sales base, with more than 5,000 ceramic e-commerce businesses as of 2024. Buyers can meet suppliers at the annual China Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair in October.

Buyer tips

Separate the two supply chains: studio and workshop pieces (hand-painted, small batches, wide variation) versus factory tableware (consistent, higher MOQ). A buyer who needs matching sets for retail should work with a factory, not a studio.
For anything food-contact, get lead and cadmium migration tests to the target market's rules (US FDA/California Prop 65, EU 84/500/EEC and national limits); overglaze decoration and bright reds and yellows carry the most risk.
Hand-made porcelain has natural defects (pinholes, slight warping, glaze runs); agree on a written AQL and a defect library with photos before production, and budget for breakage in transit with double-box or molded pulp packing.
'Made in Jingdezhen' is a protected regional brand (景德镇制) with a traceability code system; ask whether the supplier is registered if you plan to market the origin.
