Huaqiangbei grew from the SEG Electronics Market, founded in 1988 as China's first specialised electronic-components market, into a street of more than twenty electronics malls. It is where hardware start-ups source components and where accessory sellers find phone cases, cables, chargers and gadgets. It suits electronics brands, repair businesses and e-commerce sellers of accessories. Many counters are traders rather than factories and trade by sample and small lots, with factory production arranged in the surrounding Pearl River Delta.
