Alibaba Trade Assurance: What It Covers and How to Claim

Quick answer

Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com's free buyer-protection program for orders placed and paid online through Alibaba.com. If the supplier does not ship, the goods go missing, or they arrive damaged, defective or different from the order, you can request a refund, generally within 30 days of delivery (60 days for Enterprise buyers). It does not cover payments made outside Alibaba.com, and it only judges quality against what the order actually specifies.

Trade Assurance is the main reason many importers keep their Alibaba.com orders on the platform instead of paying suppliers directly. It gives you a route to a refund when an order goes wrong, with Alibaba.com mediating between you and the supplier. It is also widely misunderstood: it is not insurance, it does not cover everything, and it only works if you set the order up properly.

What Trade Assurance covers#

Trade Assurance covers orders placed and paid online through Alibaba.com when the supplier fails to deliver what the order says. According to Alibaba.com's money-back policy, you can request a refund when an order:

  1. Has not been shipped as agreed.
  2. Goes missing in delivery.
  3. Arrives with product issues, such as defective, incorrect or damaged items, or goods that do not match the agreed quality.

Alibaba.com also lists related services under the Trade Assurance umbrella:

  • Secure payments processed through Alibaba.com.
  • Delivery-delay compensation on eligible orders (details below).
  • Easy Return for eligible orders, with free local returns for defective products in supported countries.
  • After-sales services such as installation, maintenance or replacement parts on qualifying products.

The program is free for buyers. Alibaba.com states that suppliers pay a fee on Trade Assurance transactions.

What it does not cover#

Trade Assurance is only as strong as the order you create. The most common gaps are:

SituationCovered?Why
You paid through Alibaba.com checkoutYesThis is what the program protects
You paid the supplier's own bank account, PayPal or a payment link outside Alibaba.comNoOff-platform payments are not Trade Assurance orders

Risk

The classic scam

A supplier offers a discount if you pay "directly" to save the platform fee, or suddenly says their Alibaba payment account has a problem. The moment you pay outside Alibaba.com, Trade Assurance no longer applies. Refuse and report it.

Eligible payment methods#

Any payment you make through the Alibaba.com checkout for a Trade Assurance order counts. The methods offered depend on your country, the currency, the supplier and the order size. As of September 2026, Alibaba.com lists:

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and others)
  • Bank wire transfer (T/T) to the account shown in the order
  • Online bank transfer and local methods in some countries (for example Boleto in Brazil, iDEAL in the Netherlands)
  • Digital wallets such as PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Pay-later options for eligible buyers

Limits and fees differ by method; card payments usually carry a processing fee, and bank transfers take longer to confirm. For a wider comparison of how to pay suppliers, including outside Alibaba.com, see how to pay Chinese suppliers.

How to set up an order so it is protected#

The details you put into the order decide what you can claim later. Before you pay, make sure the Trade Assurance order includes:

  1. Product specifications: materials, dimensions, colors (with Pantone or a reference sample), functions and packaging.
  2. Quantity and unit price for each item.
  3. Shipping date or delivery date, and the Incoterm (for example FOB Ningbo or DDP to your address).
  4. Quality standard and inspection terms, such as an AQL level and your right to a pre-shipment inspection.
  5. Attachments: approved sample photos, drawings and the proforma invoice.

A signed-off golden sample (how to order samples) and a third-party inspection report (pre-shipment inspection checklist) give you objective evidence if goods arrive wrong.

How to file a claim#

Claims start from your order page, and the first step is always negotiating with the supplier. Alibaba.com steps in to mediate only if you cannot agree.

  1. Collect evidence as soon as goods arrive: photos and videos of cartons, labels and defects, the inspection report, and chat records.
  2. Open a refund request from My Alibaba > Orders > order details, choose the reason and state the amount you are asking for.
  3. Negotiate with the supplier inside the Alibaba.com dispute flow. Keep all communication on the platform so it counts as evidence.
  4. Escalate to Alibaba.com if the supplier does not respond or you cannot agree. Alibaba.com reviews both sides' evidence and decides the outcome.
  5. Return goods if required. For some claims you must ship items back; follow the instructions in the case.

Keep your side of the process moving. Response deadlines apply to both parties during negotiation, and a case can close if you do not reply in time.

Timelines to remember#

Deadlines are where most claims fail. The key dates, per Alibaba.com's published policies as of September 2026:

  • Refund request window: within 30 days of the delivery date; 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers.
  • Easy Return: free local returns within 30 days of delivery for eligible defective products, on orders under US$3,000 in supported countries (50+ countries including the US, UK, Canada, Germany and Australia).
  • Delivery-delay compensation: under Alibaba.com's On-time Delivery Guarantee terms, eligible Trade Assurance orders not dispatched or delivered by the specified date can receive compensation of 10% of the order value (excluding service fees), capped at US$100, issued as a coupon. You must apply within 30 calendar days of the specified date, and coupons expire after 90 days.

For sea freight, 30 days from delivery can pass quickly if goods sit at a warehouse. Open and check cartons as soon as they arrive, and file promptly even if you are still negotiating with the supplier.

Is Trade Assurance enough?#

Trade Assurance is a useful safety net, not a quality-control system. It helps you get money back when a supplier clearly breaks the order terms, but it cannot stop defective goods from being made or shipped.

Combine it with the basics: verify the supplier before paying, write detailed specs into the order, inspect before shipment, and keep every conversation on Alibaba.com.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trade Assurance cost the buyer anything?

No. Alibaba.com states that Trade Assurance is free for buyers who pay online through the platform. Your payment method may still carry its own processing or bank fees.

Am I covered if I pay the supplier by bank transfer directly?

Only if the transfer is made to the payment account shown in your Alibaba.com order checkout. Money sent to a supplier's own bank details outside the platform is not protected by Trade Assurance.

How long do I have to file a Trade Assurance claim?

Alibaba.com's money-back policy allows refund requests within 30 days of the delivery date, extended to 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers, as of September 2026. Inspect goods as soon as they arrive so you do not miss the window.

Will Trade Assurance refund me if I just don't like the product?

Usually not. Claims are assessed against the specifications and terms written in the order, so subjective complaints without an agreed standard are hard to win.
